Ceremony Magazine

I had a professor in college that always said, "It's better to be lucky than good." Hopefully I'm ok at what I do as well but everyone I know in the industry keeps telling me how lucky I am... that this just doesn't happen. This month I had another wedding published... my second, in my first year of business. This time in Ceremony Magazine, the uber-cool SoCal wedding magazine. I'm so excited to have my work featured among some of the best wedding photographers in the world. I really have to thank a few people. First Michelle McFarlane of Annie M. Events, for bringing me out to shoot this beautiful wedding, and second, Karli Tanner of Simply Mumtaz Events for convincing Michelle that I was the one to hire.

I'm so blessed to be doing something I love.

Jenny and Cameron

This afternoon I met Jenny and Cameron in Laguna Beach to shoot their engagement pictures. It was a perfect day and we got a ton of great stuff. I also got to try out my new lens... the 50mm 1.2. Its so amazing and is pretty much the reason I switched to Canon. It was super tough to find but I finally tracked one down about 2 o'clock this afternoon. Just enough time to pick it up and make it over to Laguna for the shoot.

Here are a few of my favorites from this afternoon.

Monica and Ian

After my horrific 22 hour travel experience I finally got home Monday morning after spending the night (at least 4 hours of it) in San Jose. That afternoon I went to Yorba Regional Park in Yorba Linda to shoot Monica and Ian's engagement pics. Aside from it being a little cold, we had a great time and got some really cool images.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Good Times.

I arrived in Austin Friday afternoon and met my old college roomate, Nic, and his wife, Johanna, at the Filker Botanical Gardens. They asked me to shoot a few pics of them while I was in town. So I met them out there and while it was a bit overcast the weather held off long enough to get a few good shots before it really started to rain.

We went and grabbed some coffee and waited a couple hours for our other roomate, David, to get in from Dallas. He got in around 8pm and met us at my favorite restaurant in the world, Carrabba's. If you live anywhere east of Las Vegas you probably have one near you and you owe it to yourself to try it out. Its the most amazing italian food in the world. We hung out and talked for hours, telling stories all of us had heard and laughing so hard our stomachs hurt.

That night we walked outside and realized that it was not only raining, it was freaking freezing too... well it wasn't technically freezing but 40 is really cold for a boy from Orange County. Needless to say I was a bit worried about my shoot the next day... the whole reason I was in town. Well the next day I woke up and looked out the hotel window to see pouring rain. Not good news. After waiting a few hours to see if we'd get a break from the pouring rain and freezing temperatures I called the couple and we decided to cancel the shoot and hope for better weather today. As a side note, yesterday actually set the record for the most rain in one day ever in Austin.

So I get up this morning hoping for better weather. No such luck. Still raining steadily and even colder that yesterday. So David and I grab some lunch and head over to Starbucks. We finished our coffee, said our goodbyes and I took off for the airport.

This is David... he has a blog call "Three words back". He wanted a new pic for his blog so I took one for him in Starbucks.

I got to the airport at 2:50 for my 3:30 filght, freaking out, thinking I was going to miss my flight. I got up to the ticket counter and found out my flight had been delayed 30 minutes. That was the last good thing that happened today.

We wait for about an hour and the hear that the flight will be delayed another hour. We finally board the plane about 4:50 and after 45 minutes of sitting on the plane the captain get on the intercom and says that someone in a previous flight stole one of the pieces to a seatbelt, and because the flight is completely full we have to wait for someone to bring us a new seatbelt. Another 20 minutes go by and they have the seatbelt installed... awesome, let's get going.

We pull back from the gate and sit... and sit. The captain comes back on the intercom and informs us that one of the engines wouldn't start so we have to have a mechanic come check it out.

More sitting.

The captain comes back on and tells us that while we were waiting for the seatbelt to arrive the starter on the left wing engine froze and when they tried to start it, it broke. He goes on to tell us that there are no starters in Austin so we all need to go see the gate agent to arrange alternate plans.

So I wait in line for an hour only to hear that they're going to put me on standby for a flight at 7:20. Awesome. The only problem is pretty much everyone else from the flight is on standby too.

So that flight comes and goes and now I'm waiting for them to fix the original plane which I'm told will probably depart about 10:30. So I'm sitting in the airport waiting to get on a jankety old plane that's going to take me to San Jose where we'll arrive about 1am and the next flight out to Orange County isn't for 7 or 8 hours.

Best day ever.

New Resolution

I've recently come to realize that I actually have a decent amount of loyal readers. They tell me that they get annoyed when they check my blog 4 times a day for a week and I don't post anything. So as a somewhat delayed resolution for the new year I'm resolving to blog more often. Now, I realize that my life is not all that interesting and I don't have shoots everyday to show you guys, so this could get really boring really quickly. If it does just start leaving me hints in my comments like... "there's nothing wrong with taking a break" and I'll start saving up for some more quality posts.

So here's somewhat pointless post #1.

Yesterday Trever, one of my best friends, called me up to see if I'd come hang out with him and assist him on a shoot. He was shooting some landscape shots for a real estate group here in Orange County and needed an extra hand. So we drove around Laguna Beach sneaking into gated neighborhoods so he could take pictures of their rediculous private beaches and get chased off by their security guards.

Good times.

Oh by the way if you happen to pick up a copy of Riviera or Space magazine you can see some of his work. He shot the ad campaign for HOM real estate group about a month ago and it just came out in this month's issues.

Cornucopia of Canon

Today the UPS man came and delivered a veritable cornucopia of Canon goodness. Most of you won't quite grasp the significance of this event but its a pretty huge deal for me and my photography.

Nikon is the arch-nemesis of Canon and in the fiercely competitive photography market, while there may be a dozen or so brands, there are only two considered by professionals... Canon and Nikon. Until today I was a Nikon shooter. Unlike most people, I think both brands have strengths and weaknesses and until recently I've held to the belief that Nikon's strengths outweighed their weaknesses. Well nothing has really changed but Canon released a lens last month that swung me over to their side. The 50mm 1.2. So with all of the other things Canon has going for them this was enough to make me reconsider my loyalty. It seems like Canon is being more innovative and I want in on that.

So I'm now officially shooting Canon and couldn't be more excited.

Well I'm flying, so its not really a roadtrip... but still.

Sorry I haven't kept up with blogging. I have been really busy but not with anything too exciting. Lots of boring "office" stuff, but I do have some really cool stuff coming up in the next few days. I'm off to Texas on Friday for a shoot in Austin. I can't wait. Aside from Austin being the coolest town in the world, I went to college in Texas and I've got tons of friends there. So I scheduled a little extra time there after the shoot and I've got friends coming from Dallas, Houston and all over to hang out. It's gonna be awesome.

Oh yeah, tomorrow a shipment is arriving at my house. Check back tomorrow night to see the new toys I got!
